Primary School Outreach (May–June, 2025)

Data is not just for grown-ups! – In May and June 2025, WiDS Trinidad and Tobago embarked on an exciting journey to inspire the next generation of data storytellers through our Primary School Outreach Series! 🏫💡 From Princes Town to Arima to El Socorro, over 100 students aged 10+ explored how to turn their favourite topics like food and games into engaging stories with data.

Through real-time polls, group surveys, graph drawing, and a sprinkle of creativity, these young minds became “Data Detectives” — asking questions, collecting information, visualizing their findings, and presenting with pride.

💬 Some highlights:
🖥️ Real-time polls & digital graphs during our online sessions
🧠 Group challenges & creative data presentations in-person
✍️ Topics like favorite foods and game preferences turned into meaningful data stories

Special thanks to Princes Town Presbyterian School, Lower Cumuto Government Primary School, Arima Girls’ R.C. School, Arima Boys’ R.C. School and El Socorro T.I.A Primary School for allowing us to provide these exciting sessions for your students. A huge thank you to our dedicated mentors, encouraging teachers and of course these intelligent and enthusiastic students, who showed us:
✅ High engagement and teamwork
✅ Boosted confidence in sharing ideas
✅ Impressive curiosity about AI tools like ChatGPT & Roblox development

One thing’s clear: the next generation of data scientists is already asking the right questions. Their energy, enthusiasm, and teamwork blew us away and we are confident that some of these learners are future data scientists, educators, and innovators.

A very special thank you to the participating mentors, volunteers and contributors to these sessions: Lesley-Ann Jurawan, Priya T. Ramdial, Faith Persad, Fareena Alladin, Daria Hypolite, Nicholas Smith, Julie Koon Koon, Erica P. Harris, Videsh Jagai, Malini Ramberran, Letetia Addison (PhD, SFHEA)

Let’s keep building data literacy from the ground up.
